Food is one of life's necessities and greatest pleasures. In the 21st century, food is also central to our health and environmental crises where food choices can contribute to non communicable diseases like diabetes and where children (particularly in Malaysia) are both malnourished and obese in globally significant numbers.
Learning about the food we eat, how it affects our environment, how it affects us and the people involved in making our food is an important subject that we need to be more informed about.
Eat your Landscape : EDIBLE LANDSCAPE | LOWLAND VEGETABLES | LOCAL FARMS; Growing Wisdom : SOIL SCIENCE | PROPAGATION | THE GOOD FARMER; Nourish: HOW TO EAT | SWEET, SOUR, BITTER | WHAT ANIMALS EAT; Kitchen Skills; COOKING CLASS | FERMENTATION | HERBS
Our Edible Education series is based on these pillars:
EATING YOUR LANDSCAPE: Starting with tours through our farm and garden, we help create the connection between our surrounding landscape and the food we eat. We learn about the bounty of nature and also why its important to protect and manage it.
GROWING WISDOM: We teach the basics of how to grow things like soil preparation, propagation, and organic methods of fertilising and sustainable methods like composting and mulching. But we try to avoid telling children what to grow - they can discover themselves if their preference is to grow flowers, trees or vegetables. We also cover ethics: how animals and the workers we employ should be treated.
NOURISH: Understanding basic concepts of nutrition, understanding our own culinary heritage we navigate a path to making better choices.
KITCHEN SKILLS: Making and cooking food is a journey into our heritage, community effort and the science of how ingredients are transformed magically into delicious nourishing food.
Edible Education classes are suitable for Children, Families & Adults. They can be tailored to suit the skill set level of the attendees.
